Tester Feedback Priorities: Notifications, Recurring Workouts, and Accountability

Our first wave of tester friends put FitBuddy through its paces this week, and their candid feedback was a goldmine. The verdict was clear: before we open the doors to the broader fitness community, we need to tighten the feedback loops that bring people back, automate repetitive setup, and add structure around who shows up — and when.

The next FitBuddy sprint focuses on accountability-driven features

What we heard from early FitBuddy testers

  • "I need the app to remind me before the workout starts." Without proactive nudges, even motivated users forget to re-open the app.
  • "I keep rebuilding the same workout every week." Power users want recurring templates rather than manual duplication.
  • "We can't have the whole gym showing up." Organizers need a way to cap attendance.
  • "I want to know who actually started and who is in." Accountability hinges on explicit commitment from both hosts and participants.

1. Smart notifications that drive action

Notifications are more than reminders — they are the call-to-action that pulls people back into FitBuddy at the right moment.

  • Pre-workout prompts: Push and email reminders 24 hours and 30 minutes before start time with a one-tap "I'm in" response.

2. Recurring workouts without repeated setup

The manual process of recreating the same Wednesday run is friction we can eliminate.

  • Templates: Save any workout as a reusable blueprint with location, time, and participant roles.
  • Auto-scheduling: Allow hosts to select weekly or custom cadences with automatic calendar generation.
  • Quick edits: Modify a single instance without breaking the full series.

3. Participant limits for better session planning

Too many attendees can dilute the experience; too few can kill the vibe.

  • Attendance cap: Hosts can set a maximum number of participants to avoid overcrowding.
  • Waitlists: Overflow participants join a queue and are auto-notified when a spot opens.
  • Capacity-aware notifications: When a workout is nearly full, subscribers get a final prompt to claim their slot.

4. Accountability flows: starting and confirming workouts

Accountability only works when commitments are explicit. We're designing a two-step confirmation loop.

  • Host "Start Workout" action: Signals that the session is live and pings all confirmed participants.
  • Participant check-ins: A quick swipe to confirm "On my way" or "I'm here" so the group knows who is active.
  • Attendance receipts: After the session, participants receive a summary of who showed up, reinforcing consistency streaks.

Our immediate roadmap

We're bundling these improvements into the next pre-launch sprint:

  1. Notification infrastructure — finalize message templates, schedule cadences, and integrate with push + email providers.
  2. Recurring workout engine — ship template creation, cloning, and per-instance overrides.
  3. Capacity management — add attendee caps, waitlists, and real-time availability indicators.
  4. Accountability UX — deliver start/confirm flows with clear states and post-workout summaries.

The testers reaffirmed that FitBuddy’s strongest value is shared accountability. These feature upgrades lock that in, ensuring that when we invite the broader community, every workout feels intentional, organized, and energizing. If you want early access or have ideas we should consider, drop a note — we’re building this with you.
