Building FitBuddy: From Idea to MVP

Every app starts with an idea, but turning that idea into reality requires the right approach, tools, and mindset. Here's the story of how FitBuddy went from concept to a working MVP, and the key decisions that shaped our development journey.

The Core Concept: Social Fitness Companion

The idea behind FitBuddy is simple but powerful: create an app where people can keep each other accountable for doing their workouts. We've all experienced the struggle of maintaining fitness motivation alone, but research shows that social accountability dramatically improves adherence to exercise routines.

Planning with AI: Claude.ai as Our Co-Founder

Rather than diving straight into development, we started by using Claude.ai to help plan the idea and create a comprehensive roadmap for our MVP. This AI-assisted planning phase helped us identify core features, user flows, and potential challenges before writing a single line of code.

Technology Stack: Flutter + Supabase

Choosing the right technology stack is crucial for any startup. After evaluating various options, we settled on Flutter with a Supabase backend for several compelling reasons:

Why Flutter?

Flutter emerged as our clear winner for cross-platform development. Compared to React Native and other alternatives, Flutter offers superior performance, a more consistent UI across platforms, and faster development cycles. The ability to write once and deploy to both iOS and Android with native performance was exactly what we needed.

Why Supabase?

Supabase proved to be the perfect backend solution, offering everything we needed in one platform: robust authentication, PostgreSQL database, and blob storage for profile pictures. It's fast, reliable, and allows us to focus on building features rather than managing infrastructure.

Foundation First: User Profiles

We started development with user profiles as our foundation. This wasn't arbitrary – user profiles are the cornerstone of any social fitness app. They establish identity, preferences, and the social graph that makes accountability possible.

Design Decisions: AI-Assisted UX

Claude.ai played a crucial role in our design decisions, from color scheme selection to Material Design 3 implementation. Having an AI collaborator helped us quickly evaluate multiple design approaches and settle on a cohesive visual identity that feels both modern and approachable.

Rapid Prototyping with Mock Data

One of our key early decisions was to build the app using mock data for rapid prototyping. This approach allowed us to iterate quickly on UI and user flow without getting bogged down in backend complexities and data loading complications. We could see how the app felt to use before investing heavily in the backend implementation.

Architecture and Collaboration

We established clear code architecture principles and a consistent color scheme from day one, then worked with Claude Code to bring the vision to life. This structured approach ensured that every component we built fit into a cohesive whole.

Building FitBuddy has been an exciting journey of balancing technical decisions with user needs. By keeping our MVP focused and leveraging the right tools – both technological and AI-assisted – we've been able to move quickly from idea to working prototype. The real test now is getting it into users' hands and learning from their feedback.
